NSI & DOOD Radio interviews Angela Howell about Finding The Gift
The gift of life is with us throughout our journey here on earth. Are we aware of how to make life the best it can be? Complaining about our circumstances seems to be a natural characteristic of human beings. We find something every day to whine about. It could be something as simple as burnt toast at our breakfast. We choose to be annoyed about it rather than to say, “ I am grateful I have toast to eat.” Why don’t we choose gratitude first? Is it a form of behavior that we have learned and slowly becomes habitual?

Gratitude helps you in your seach for the gift
When you drive to work tomorrow take a look at how disgruntled the people inside the car on either side of you appear. It is highly unusual to see someone who appears happy. Why is that? Have they forgotten how lucky they are to have a car and to have a job? Even if you dislike your job, it is a reason to get up in the morning and to be grateful. We all have the power to change circumstances in our life. However few people realize that they hold the key to unlock what it is that keeps them bound in misery.
From a personal standpoint, I believe that complaining is a habit that can be broken. If you take the time to speak to somebody who has been through a severe illness or tragedy, it is rare that they will be chronic complainers. Perhaps it takes the devastation of hitting rock bottom to appreciate the simple things in life that give us the most joy and are often taken for granted. Frequently, we need a wake-up call and a kick in the backside. When our very essence is challenged, something happens to our psyche that helps us to see the glory and the gifts surrounding us every day.
Finding The Gift
Let us do a quick test on gratitude. Think about your daily life, and be sure to include your relationships, your living quarters, school, or the type of work you do. Is there something you would like to change about any of the above? Do you complain about what you do not like and at the same time do nothing to change it? Believe it or not you are not alone. We can all find something in our lives that we would like to improve, however we do not lift a finger to bring about that change we are hoping for. Believe me, there is nothing magical about making a change in your life because it all takes an attitude adjustment and some work. It would be a mistake on my part not to tell you that I too have had to do work on my attitude. My husband reminds me when I start slipping back into my “self-pity” mode. Learning to change your negative mindset is rewarding and extremely uplifting. When you practice overlooking daily adversity and enjoy the glory of the gift it’s like a new start.
