Performing arts are benefical for everyone

Performing arts and creativity can be magical.  Involvement in the performing arts enriches the lives of all participants and creates a positive effect on society in general for people of all ages.  Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in theater and art groups that are focused on enhancing the lives of people with disabilities.  One such group originated in Hollywood, Florida in 1991 named The Exceptional Theater Company. The group has grown significantly over the last 14 years. The group is a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization.  Their classes teach all forms of theatre to persons with physical and intellectual challenges.  ETC works tirerlessly to create opportunities for personal growth by teaching theatrical skills of expression.

The performing arts are part of our societyPerforming Art and creative art programs have taken a big hit in our public schools system. The budget cuts of recent years have taken many of these programs off the agenda.  This is especially true in the special-education sector.  Art programs, both performing arts and visual can change the lives of youths with learning disabilities, developmental issues, and physical challenges.  Musical theater groups, dance groups, and art studios are a positive experience for the participants, and they also enrich the lives of the families of the challenged and the public.  Researchers have confirmed that any form of creativity and artistic expression  helps to improve the participants attitude at any stage of life.  Activities include dance, drama, music, visual, literary, and design can enhance one’s ability to deal with life’s disappointments and challenges.

Often people with special needs feel excluded from enriching activities such as sports and the arts. There are many reasons why they may hesitate to become part of artistic groups. However, the most obvious is fear of rejection. Being different in a society that worships perfection is not an easy plight at any age. It is damaging to children, adults, and seniors. Isolation and lack of community activity is a negative experience and chip away at self-confidence. Acceptance and inclusion are important aspects of self-esteem growth. Individuals with disability issues often flourish and shine when they are allowed a form of self-expression through the arts.  Such involvement in the arts community is a powerful self -respect building activity, as well as an opportunity to make new friends.  Clearly musical and visual art programs are an integral part of a well-balanced life. Happiness and well-being are directly related to creativity and self-expression.

Music and art therapy are often included in hospitals and health centers to assist and help in the healing process.  Activity in the arts has proven to be great mood enhancers.

The Exceptional Theater Company’s director is a dynamic woman by the name of Debra Lombard.  She has a support staff of ten.  The theater has an active board of directors who work  continually to build the company and raise the necessary operating funds.  DOOD Radio is pleased to have Deborah visiting today.  Joining her will be Sandra Levitt, board member and fundraiser.  Sandra is Dedicated to ETC’s mission and is an outstanding fundraiser.
