The ADA which had it’s 25th anniversary on July 26th, 2015, has not only helped millions of people in the US, it has set a standard for the rights of people with disabilities all over the world.  One hundred eighty one countries around the world have adopted laws similar to The Americans with Disabilities Act in an effort to protect the rights of people with special needs. That is a reason to rejoice. The list of countries recognizing the need for such legislation is growing every year. Not only does this increase the quality of life for citizens of their own country it makes it a lot more likely that people with challenges will visit foreign shores knowing that many of their needs will be met.

Back in the 80s I visited Europe and found that many places were inaccessible to me because I have a mobility challenge. Every building had stairs and was not equipped with an alternative entrance. At that time, I was able to walk stairs but with a great deal of stress on my body. It was extremely difficult for me to get around in places like Morocco. I was stronger than, so with a great deal of effort I managed to navigate the terrain. I remember thinking to myself way back then, “what would my life be like if I lived here permanently?” It was an extremely scary thought since I was very active professionally in the US.

The ADA has grown and changed in the last 25 years.  However, even here in the US the employment records for people with disabilities still remain shamefully low compared to the able-bodied community. I cannot speak with any authority but I am sure it is even worse on foreign shores. I asked myself what could be done to expedite the solving of this sad issue? Why should anyone be considered unemployable because of a physical or developmental challenge? With the right support, training, education, and governmental legislation, I do not see a reason why anybody who is willing and able to work should be denied the opportunity that everyone else takes for granted.

Live a happy life no matter what!

Live a happy life no matter what! The ADA can help you.

Let us think about the quality of life for a minute and the role the ADA might play. Do you think you would be happy living without a purpose in your life simply existing in a sphere of hopelessness? Let’s face it; living with a disability is a challenging life. However, it should not be a life without meaning or happiness. Living without happiness is exactly what happens to many people with disabilities. Employment means hope and the chance to improve ones life. Why are there so many corporations and companies unwilling to hire people with disabilities? Is it fear of the unknown or perhaps concerns that it will be financially unproductive and a drain on their business? Statistics show when people with special needs are given a chance to be employed they become outstanding, dedicated, overachieving, and grateful employees. I do admit that there may be some modifications necessary to accommodate the individual with a challenge. However, in most cases the modifications are minor and of little expense to the company.

Agencies that work under the guidelines of the ADA.  I am not sure what is available outside of the US to assist people with disabilities find employment, but right here on our shores there are many agencies who exist solely to provide services for people with special needs and to reach out to companies willing to employ trained individuals. They work to match the potential employee with the needs of the company so that the union between employee and company is a good match.  Google is your best friend. Read about the ADA and how it can help you or someone you love.

Your government and the ADA. I am deeply moved by the growth of legislation worldwide to protect the rights of people with disabilities. Good things are happening.  However they are happening very slowly. We have to keep fighting as a society to protect those among us who are vulnerable. The world is a beautiful place for most people, but it should be just as beautiful and full of opportunities for all including people with disabilities. Let us make it happen with the help of the ADA.
