Real music and whether or not the current form of popular music is considered real music can start a fight between generations. Our grandparents argue that todays music or what their grandchildren consider music is a distorted mechanical, technical, version of what real music, lyrics, and melody should sound like. Folks like me, baby boomers, still love the music we grew up listening. It was rock ‘n roll, rhythm and blues, Motown, hard rock, jazz, and real live concerts preformed without million-dollar productions and special effects. The very first date I had with my husband was to an intimate jazz club. Where have all those cozy little jazz clubs gone? I still remember taking my children to see Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five in concert. The theater did not have a bad seat in it and there was no such thing as being so far back that the figures on the stage appeared to be miniature.
There has always been a war regarding the value and the art form of popular music between the generations. Does anybody reading this remember Elvis Presley? When he popped onto the scene his hip movements while he was singing were considered outrageous by our parents and they called Presley’s performance borderline obscene. It is actually funny because it is an argument that I believe will go on forever because technology is advancing and changing the way the public listens to music. As the world turned and time progressed, turntables, 78’s and 45 records, cassette tapes, CD’s and record stores became a thing of the past. Major record label companies began shrinking as well. Music videos were the hottest thing in the 80s and 90s and cable companies gobbled them up. I remember doing my exercises every morning to music videos. Today there are are only two major record labels and several independents trying to promote their artists in the market place.
Real music has become digital and downloaded to our smart devices and computers on demand. Kids today concider this digitaly enhanced sound real music. It leaves me wondering what tomorrow will bring as we hang on to our favorite old time real music usually from our teenage to young adult years. Inevitably this favored digital music of young people today will fade and be replaced by something not yet known as we move into tomorrow.
