Networking in the digital age has put an interesting twist on communication. Since the advances in technology and the growth of the internet, networking is easier than ever. If you are an introvert, you don’t even have to make eye contact. Is that a good thing?  There are tons of social media networks applications to meet new people from all over the world.  It’s like candy world on the internet.  It’s about as alluring as networking can get. People who are just like you, building businesses and seeking new opportunities….or are they?  It’s good news, isn’t it?  However, that’s where the good news gets cloudy.  The bad news is you don’t really know who you are meeting or anything about their history without an in-depth background check.  All these avenues to branch out and share information can also be paths to dead ends and scammers.  What happened to good old fashioned “face to face networking?”  It seems that many of the standard and accepted ways to make new connections are still alive and working.  We still do business with people we know, like, and trust.

Let’s role play for a moment.  You arrive at a new networking event that is filled with people who all seem to know each other.  A feeling of isolation and panic sweeps over you.

What would you do?

  1. Make an about face and head for the door?
  2. Break into a conversation in an effort to introduce yourself?
  3. Wait for someone to make eye contact with you so you can push a business card in their hand?
  4. Find someone who looks like a wall flower and start a conversation?
  5. What would you do when someone at the event is hogging your time and preventing you from circulating?

Upon leaving you find that you have collected an additional 50 new business cards to add to your collection of thousands.

  1. Would you carefully file them by category?
  2. Send a “nice to meet you” email the very next day?
  3. Make a personalized phone call to some of the more interesting new contacts?
  4. All three choices?

There  are endless opportunities that can make network, both on and off line extremely productive or a complete waste of time.  Never Say Impossible Radio interviews Kathy Condon, author of “Face to Face Networking-It’s all About Communications.”  Kathy has made networking an art form and has many tips to make your esperience a rewarding one.
