Dance On Your Disabilities
One more down three to go. India is now polio free! I just read a wonderful article I wish to share. Let us all celebrate India’s victory in the war against polio. They are now officially recognized as ” polio free. ” As a polio survivor living with post-polio syndrome and the late effects of the virus, I cannot ignore the outstanding success India achieved to end the spread of this crippling disease. In a country with a population of over 1.2 billion people, the effort put forth by healthcare workers and volunteers to go door to door vaccinating every child has been nothing short of amazing. Polio may have been forgotten in the Western Hemisphere, but it lingered on for decades in South-East Asia, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria destroying the futures of its victim’s and changing their lives forever.
Unfortunately, it is not over yet because there are three remaining countries where polio continues to infect people. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are still reporting cases of paralytic polio. Education is the key, and vaccination is the answer. Why should any child ever suffer from polio or post-polio syndrome later in life? As polio survivors, it is our responsibility to raise our voices in unison to celebrate India’s victory and support the remaining push to eradicate polio worldwide. Although the late effects of polio have affected the majority of us who survived the initial infection and created new weaknesses and difficult to manage challenges in our lives today, we are the lucky ones who survived. Polio happened to us, but it does not define us. We are who we are despite polio. The battles and victories we have won are stories that will help those who have yet to face physical and emotional difficulties caused by any number of reasons. Life happens with or without our consent. Let’s celebrate the wins and remember to always Dance on Your Disabilities! Happiness is a choice no matter what!
