Never Say Impossible Radio interviews Mari-Lyn Harris
Meet another special person today!
What do you think of when you think of a person who wants to give back to society? What pops into my mind initially is the selfless person who wants to make other people’s lives better and just a bit happier. That to me is an altruistic giver.
Then there are those who give because they have been taught to give during their upbringing. They give freely to charities and organized religion without much thought about the recipients. Wait a minute; there is a third type of giver. There are those among us that give only when they cannot get out of giving. You know the type of person I am talking about. We meet them every day, at work, at social events, and often within our own families. I am talking about the type of person who spends freely on themselves but struggles to find the generosity to give a birthday gift to a relative or join in a group within the office wanting to celebrate the birth of a coworker’s child, or a retirement party. In some cases, it may take a great deal of persuasion to get that type of person to reach into their pocket and tip a taxi driver or waitress.
Up until now, I have been speaking about monetary giving, but I have not discussed the type of individual who gives openly and freely to help someone else succeed. This type of giver goes about their lives quietly and unpretentiously giving their time, mentorship hours, as well as support to others and they expect nothing in return. What a perfect world this would be if everybody tried a little harder to give a little more to their fellow man. I will take it one step further. What if we combined the generosity of the giver, and the kindness of a loving person into the way that we interact with each other, not just socially, but how we respond to one another in the business world on a daily basis?
