For almost thirty years, Dr. Richard L. Bruno has studied and treated nearly 6,000 polio survivors and is the world\’s leading expert on Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS).

The majority of the population has forgotten poliomyelitis,  the virus that spread  like wildfire for decades in the 20th century  wreaking lives,  as well as ending lives.  In the last 60 years the spread of the virus has been controlled,  but not eradicated through the administration of a vaccine.  Many of us who survived the initial infection  are still fighting the late effects on our  central nervous system.

According to some studies, up to half the people who had polio at a young age may experience late effects of the disease many years later. The symptoms appear 15–30 years after recovery from the original attack.  Symptoms include acute or increased muscular weaknesspain in the muscles, and fatigue.  Many people who were misdiagnosed  during the initial infection experience the same symptoms  years after a nonparalytic polio infection.

One of the most common complaints of polio survivors who have developed post polio syndrome,  is that they cannot find a well-trained physician to help them manage post polio syndrome.  I was one of the lucky people to have been treated by Dr. Richard Bruno, a renowned specialist in the treatment of post polio sequelae.

Early this year Dr. Bruno visited Dancing On Our Disabilities Radio and answered some of the nagging questions  many polio survivors still worry about .  Click here to listen to Dr. Richard L. Bruno.  This is a replay of an earlier interview:Non-Flash MP3 Direct Link
